The trinocular microscope incorporates the two traditional eyepieces for normal viewing plus a third port on which a camera can be mounted to allow magnified images to be captured, recorded and viewed on a remote screen. With relentless improvements in digital photography technology, trinocular microscopes are becoming more and more popular as well as increasingly affordable.

The advantages of a dual view microscope of this type are the greater comfort and ease-of-use it affords users, especially when using the microscope for a prolonged period of time, as well as the ability for several operators to view the same image on a screen at the same time. Images can be captured either as moving images or still shots, allowing for improved documentation and record keeping.
